French Maid Definition:

A lady's maid servant of French origin, formerly considered a status symbol among wealthy households during Edwardian times; now usually with reference to the titillating costume associated with them.

The name derives from their being worn by stereotypical characters in risqué burlesque performances in France.

A wide variety of costumes are manufactured and marketed under the "French maid" description. These French Maid outfits range from comparatively modest dresses extending past the thigh to transparent nightgowns or lingerie ensembles that barely cover the derriere.

 

The classic French Maid costume is very short and form fitting (usually made of silk or rayon blend) and is trimmed with white lace. The French Maid outfit usually has a low scoop neckline or at times cuffs and a collar (cuffs are not attached) with short puff sleeves. The design of the dress is usually short enough to display the undergarment, especially when the woman bends over.

French Maid or Meido or Kosupure:

Japanese version of the French maid meaning meido. It seems meidos (maid in English) is used for more than dress up and parading new frilly dresses in public, it is also worn to attract the opposite sex and used as uniforms for dozens of meido cafe's or theme restaurants that started in Akihabara, Tokyo, Japan over 10 years ago.
